What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are gel or liquid-type substances that are injected into the body to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, make facial features more symmetrical, and restore areas of volume loss. Dermal fillers can be used to enhance facial features and gain a more youthful appearance.
Why are dermal fillers used?
As we age, our bodies start to lose collagen. Collagen is an important substance that exists in the skin, muscles, bones, and connective tissues. Every year after the age of 25, we lose 1% of our collagen. This loss of collagen slowly over time is part of the reason for signs of aging, such as loss of fullness in the face and thinner skin.
What to expect during a dermal filler appointment?
During the consultation process, your injector will review your medical history, examine your face, and discuss your goals and what areas you’d like to enhance. Your face may be marked with a pen or marker to show where the injections will be. Then, topical anesthetic is applied. Once numbed, your skin is cleaned and small amounts of dermal fillers are injected under your skin. After receiving dermal filler injections, your skin is cleaned and an ice pack is applied to reduce pain and swelling. The entire process can take up to an hour.
Are there any side effects?
Yes. The most common side effect is swelling, discomfort, or bruising at the site of injection.
Usually, these side effects are mild and go away in a few days. However, it can take up to 2 weeks for dermal fillers to settle completely and swelling and bruising to resolve fully. Rare but serious complications include: asymmetrical appearance, scaring, infection, tissue necrosis, and vascular occlusion.
How much does Dermal Filler cost?
Each syringe consists of 1ml-1.2ml of filler, and the cost per syringe varies between $500 -$850 depending on the type of filler used.
