As we age, our bodies start to lose collagen. Collagen is an important substance that exists in the skin, muscles, bones, and connective tissues. Every year after the age of 25, we lose 1% of our collagen. This loss of collagen slowly over time is part of the reason for signs of aging, such as loss of fullness in the face and thinner skin.
The most common types dermal fillers include:
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring acid in your skin. It gives your skin volume and keeps it hydrated. With age, your body’s production of hyaluronic acid decreases leaving the skin looking less youthful. Results from HA injections usually last six months to a year. Restylane, Versa, Juvaderm, and RHA are commonly used types of HA filler.
Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) is a type of filler that consists of a substance you have in your bones. Results from these fillers can last 1-2 years. Examples of CaHA fillers include Radiesse.
Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a substance that helps your body create its own collagen to smooth deep wrinkles and correct volume loss. Results can last two years or more. Examples of PLLA fillers include Sculptra. SCULPTRA comes as a fine particulate, that when reconstituted with saline, looks very similar to a small amount of baking soda mixed with water. SCULPTRA is injected into deeper areas of the face stimulates your body to create collagen where it is injected.
Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) fillers consist of collagen and very small balls that stay under your skin after your healthcare provider injects them. The balls give your skin volume and keep it firm. Bellafill is one type of PMMA filler.
