Which is Better-Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, or Jeuveau?

Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, and Jeuveau are different brand names for botulinum toxin. They work by preventing communication between the nerve and the muscle, thereby stopping muscles from moving. This makes dynamic wrinkles or wrinkles that form when making facial expressions less noticeable. All four brands are FDA approved to treat the vertical lines between the eyebrows, horizontal lines over the forehead, and crow’s feet around the eyes. They can also be used in other areas of the face and body for both aesthetic reasons such as minimizing wrinkles as well as therapeutic reasons such as treating migraine headaches and TMJ pain.

What is the difference between the four?

All four neurotoxins are derivatives of botulinum toxin. The biggest difference is the concentration of neurotoxin in each medication and the different accessory proteins that are a part of the preparation. The potency of neurotoxin preparation is standardized into units. This means it is possible to determin how many units of Xeomin or Jeuveau someone would need based on how many units of Botox they normally get.

Another difference is cost. Botox tends to be the most expensive with Xeomin being slightly less expensive. Dysport is usually advertised as the least expensive of all four neurotoxins. Keep in mind, however, Dysport requires three times as many units to achieve the same result as one unit of Botox, Xeomin, or Jeuveau. So, keep this in mind when comparing costs. Jeuveau is a newer neurotoxin on the market and tends to be more affordable than Botox or Xeomin and just as effective.

What I have seen using all four? I use Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau regularly in my office and this is what I have found.

  • Many clients tell me they feel Dysport has a faster onset of action which may come in handy when preparing for a special event.

  • Jeuveau tends to be more precise and spreads less throughout the tissues which may give a more natural appearing result for clients who prefer a less “frozen” look.

  • Some clients develop a resistance to Botox so it may not work as well over time.

There are not huge differences in Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, or Jeuveau and all four are effective in the right injector’s hands. Here’s what I recommend:

  • Choose an experienced injector. Groupon is not the place to find a good deal on Botox.

  • Go every 3-4 months. Consistency is key. The more consistent you are with treatments, the better your results will be. None of the neurotoxins can eliminate wrinkles once you allow them to become etched into your skin. When you receive treatments consistently, you can prevent static wrinkles from forming.

  • Once you find an injector you love, stick with them as they will learn the nuances of your facial anatomy and you will have more consistent results.
